THE YOUNG, THE EXCITING, THE NEW MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United bounced back to winning ways and top 6 after a 3-1 win vs Burnley at home. The win came at the back of a solid 1st half performance where they scored 3 goals but conceded a one in the process. The 2nd half was lull without much goal mouth action with United seemingly focused on securing the 3 points. Here are my takeaways from last night's match ;

1. The Changes

Ralf Rangnick made as many as 6 changes from the starting eleven which drew at Newcastle. It was one of the rare occasions of seeing Cavani and Ronaldo start together. Luke Shaw and Aaron wan Bissaka came back into the line up, as did Jadon Sancho and Nemanja Matic. And the changes bore fruit. Burnley though attacking and creating good chances in the first few minutes, were completely blown away by a 30 minute storm. Bailly started at the heart of the defense in place of Varane. Greenwood started on the left side of the midfield while Sancho was on the right, although both the wingers interchanged their positions brilliantly during the match and warded off any chances of being predictable. On the ball United played 4-2-4 with McTominay making good attacking runs. Off the ball they played a 4-4-1-1 with Cavani playing as a number 10.

2. The Defense

Man Utd's defense has been heavily criticized this season, and rightly so. Against Burnley, they were shaky in the first few minutes but were largely untested. Shaw and wan Bissaka made excellent overlapping as well as incisive runs complementing the wide midfielders and stretching the field of play. Shaw had 84 touches in the entire match and a passing accuracy of 89.3% while wan Bissaka had 81 touches and a 76.4% passing accuracy. Although they advanced well with the ball, the crossing was extremely poor with 23% of the crosses reaching their targets. They also lost the ball too much with Shaw losing it 19 times and wan Bissaka at 14. Such mistakes can prove to be costly creating turnovers higher up the pitch against better sides.

Maguire was shaky, yet again. He's been searching for consistency, but will be held responsible for the 1st goal, where he should have squeezed in on Lennon, instead of backing away. He lost the ball 12 times, and had 6 out of his 11 attempted crosses reach their target. His partner for the night, Eric Bailly had a bittersweet match himself. He gave the ball away for the 1st goal but made up for it through some crucial blocks and interceptions. Bailly could make only 3 of his 8 attempted long passes successful, while loosing the ball 10 times.

3. The Wingers

Sancho and Greenwood were excellent on the wings. Greenwood played a huge role in the 1st goal, drawing the defenders towards him before passing it to Ronaldo for assisting McTominay. Rangnick seems to have a genuine likeness towards Greenwood, and though he still remains very young, he was entrusted with the corner taking responsibilities. Such lively performances would only encourage this young lad to become better in the future. Sancho was equally impressive, if not more. He and Greenwood interchanged placed with perfection, with their skill and energy being the hall mark of their performance. Sancho was a bit of initially, but came good with a brilliant run which resulted in a Ben Mee own goal. All in all he had 63 touches, 91.3% passing accuracy, 75% crossing rate and lost the ball just 10 times. Scary hours indeed!!

4. The Front Two

Ronaldo and Cavani started together, and boy did they complement each other well. Cavani is the perfect mobile pressing forward to Ronaldo's predatory role. Cavani dropped deep frequently and played in a number 10 role. He won all his ground duels, had 81% passing accuracy and lost the ball just 5 times. Ronaldo on the other hand, was lively, in stark contrast of his game at Newcastle a few days back. He missed 2 big chances before slotting it home from close range into an empty net. With that being his 47th goal of the year, his longevity is to applauded and admired. He had 46 touches and had 5 shots in total with 1 being on the target, and had an unlikely assist too. One can only hope he won't be berated for not clapping the fans after that performance.

5. Scott McTominay

Once in a while he drops these performances to show what he is capable of. Scott McTominay was undoubtedly my man of the match from last night. Playing as a box to box midfielder, he advanced with the ball into dangerous spaces, and took great shots from distance as well. His 1st goal was beautifully placed, while his second long ranger deflecting off the post helped Cristiano to score the second goal. All in all, he had 75.4% passing accuracy, 77 touches, won 6 out of 11 duels [both ground and aerial] and lost the ball 20 times.

6. Ralf Rangnick ball

Tuchel wasn't exaggerating when he said he took inspiration from Ralf Rangnick, for , their styles are so so similar. Matic played the role of Jorginho in breaking the play, and recovering the ball, as well as provided extra height on set pieces. The wingers interchanging positions, the full back making deep incisive runs, 2 strikers, one mobile the other a target man and most importantly, a ball carrying box to box midfielder. Yes, in my opinion, McTominay was the N'Golo Kante for United last night. The differences? The lack of collective pressing, slacking off the 2nd half, a shaky defense, and an obvious gulf in quality. United are loosing the ball way too much, even against sides like Burnley and Newcastle, creating huge number of turnovers which will be punished by the bigger teams like City and Liverpool. Rangnick needs a defensive midfielder a in January to let McTominay play his game, Matic is good but isn't getting any younger. The defense need a telling off as well, small mistakes like that will be fatal against big teams.

7. An Uneventful Burnley

Burnley, in my opinion just might get the drop this season, unless Sean Dyche can perform one of his miracles again. They were poor, unorganized and depended more on long diagonal balls over the defense. Aaron Lennon had a good game scoring that goal. He had 31 touches, 91.7% passing accuracy and lost possession just 7 times. Undoubtedly the best Burnley payer on the pitch. Burnley played a withdrawn 4-4-2 off the ball, with Lennon playing the Cavani role. Chris Wood would be ruing his missed chances earlier in the game. The fullbacks though pressing sometimes, weren't regularly putting pressure on United. The goalkeeper Hennessey had a good game and was crucial in goal, replacing the ill Nick Pope. All in all, apart from certain phases of the game and aided by an error prone and shaky Man Utd defense, Burnley didn't push enough for the win.

To summarize everything, this game could prove crucial in helping Rangnick to get a hold of things in the future. Games like these help the manager and the players confidence and helps them settle down after weeks of negativity in the press. One can only hope United will strengthen their squad in January filling up on key positions. As for Burnley, they need another Sean Dyche special after an uninspiring loss last night.

P.S- A very happy birthday to one of my most admired people in football, Sir Alex Ferguson.

THE SHIFT IN POWER IN EUROPEAN FOOTBALL : A FAN'S VIEWS

Football, the sport we love, the players we adore. Football gives us strength, courage, hope, a plethora of emotions like anger, happiness, sadness all within a span of 90 minutes. Football, as we know should always be for the fans. Fans or as I like to call them, the supporters should be the heartbeat of our wonderful sport. But lately, in the last decade or so there has been a shift in power in the footballing landscape in Europe, the hotbed of football. Its not a surprise that whatever happens in the European football scene is likely to influence the world football in some way or the other. Amid a raging pandemic and the rise of economic power houses entering this domain of the beautiful game, here are my views on the shift in power that has been so apparent in the last few years ; 1. The Economic Condition of the Players Football is for the players who play it, there's no two ways about it. For a footballer, its his job. They are lucky enough to turn their passion into their ...

THE GLADIATORS BEATEN AT THE COLOSSEUM

Real Madrid were shockingly defeated by Getafe away from home in their first league match of 2022. The goal, coming off an error by Eder Militao was enough to give three points to a Getafe side which Madrid were expected to beat. Madrid never looked the same after conceding the goal, and were nervy before a late final push to find the equalizer. The gaffer Carlo Ancelotti rightly pointed out that the players were still in " christmas mode" as Madrid looked far from their usual best. Here's me looking into the positives and negatives of our game vs Getafe; The Starting Eleven With leaks coming in from almost every possible source that Eden Hazard will start the game, it was widely expected that the Belgian will start upfront along with Benzema and Asensio. Marco Asensio, a player who starts on the right wing but likes to drop down in the midfield could have made the formation a bit for dynamic, changing from the usual 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 at times with Hazard and Benzema upf...

KYLIAN MBAPPE

Dear Kylian Mbappe,  Hello Kylian, how you doing? I hope you are pretty good, after all the fresh bag you just got must have made you feel like a God, innit? How is the smell of those crisp euros or dollars or whatever the f**k they paid you in....does it smell good? Fresh? Or does it smell of blood? Blood from the dream you just killed, blood from the soul you just sold. We, the faithful Madridistas, have encountered a lot of turmoil over the years, but yours truly stands out, for we loved you, we adored you, we wanted you to play for us at any cost.....we made extraordinary sacrifices for you, we had a DREAM for you, the one you just killed yourself. I remember seeing a picture of your younger self, in a room full of posters of my club, of my favorite player, of OUR favorite player....the one who meant the most to you, to me and to millions worldwide.... Cristiano Ronaldo. Wasn't he like a God for you? Your everything, according to your former teammates? Didn't you dream of...

Chelsea vs Aston Villa ( Date - 26/12/2021 )

Chelsea won 3-1 vs a Gerrard-less Aston Villa thanks to a Jorginho double on boxing day. As entertaining the match was, here are my thoughts on both team's performance:- CHELSEA ●  Chelsea started with a 3-4-3 and looked threatening from the onset. The wing backs, especially Alonso kept running up and down the flanks providing the width. The 3 man defense with Silva in the middle played wide but were quick to squeeze in the spaces to block the shots from the likes of Ings and Watkins. ● The midfield 3 in Chelsea, especially Kante impressed me a lot. His ball carrying prowess is criminally underrated. Whenever the wing backs put in the crosses,3 men were already waiting in the box with Kante running in for the rebound from outside. His long range shooting is very good and Tuchel looked to capitalize that. ●Jorginho was essential, not only from the spot, but his ability to break plays and spread the ball outwards is so good. Chelsea had more passes in the opposition half, more touches and...

THE PLAYER : FOR CLUB OR COUNTRY? AFCON SPECIAL

Football, the beautiful game we all love and enjoy, should ultimately be for the players. Its their job after all, to honor their contracts and be professional under every instance, no matter how challenging the situation is. The players who are European and American, including both the North and South, are often helped a great deal by their federations as well the respect they receive from the fans and society. A Brazilian or a Spanish player has a different aura about him in any league he plays . The continental showpieces of Europe and South America, the Euros and the Copa America respectively, are watched admired by people worldwide. This respect and admiration, however drains down the gutter when it comes to the African and Asian tournaments, or the players in that sense.  An African or Asian player will have to work a lot harder in order to make the name an European does. But when the disrespect towards a player, community or even a country is aimed at a continental sh...
